MG The Gloster - A Movie Review
Okay, so we are all familiar with the great '80s movie" MG The Gloster" and how funny it is. In this modern-day continuation of that classic film we have the story of the same character, but in a whole new time and place. Now John Lithgow plays the title role as the original Gloster...but in the future. The movie itself is very well done and has some great special effects. John Lithgow is one of those actors who can do every part easily. He has such a great natural talent for doing different kinds of characters that he seems to be able to adapt to any role that is thrown his way. But I feel as if he has been given the job of your average sci-fi protagonist. He has to deal with the crazy people, the aliens, and all of the other crazy stuff that comes along with being an actor. But it is his loyalty to the role that wins him the role. That and his ability to keep his own identity separate from the character he plays. I think what makes this movie so great is the constant switch from one time period to the next. We start off in the 20th Century and then jump into the future. It never gets boring. I can go back and watch parts that I enjoyed and parts that I didn't quite like as the years have gone on. We have Dr. Noah Cross (Lionel Bernardi) working for the NSA at the NSA station located at Castle Rock, Wyoming. He is one of the top agents as far as tracking down these psychic monsters. He is also a very reluctant partner to Agent Melinda Baxter (Daryl Hannah). They begin a relationship that goes bad, forcing them to work together. Once there, however, a mole takes on the identity of a dead wife of his, Rosey (Sandra Oh), and they begin having an affair. Then B.B. (Brian Bauman), a computer whiz, becomes the prime suspect in the case. MG The Gloster easily slips into this position by the end of the film as he digs himself deeper and further into Rosey's affair. So deep, in fact, that one of the FBI agents assigned to the case falls for her. In one scene, he even tries to hire her to find the real monster, Rosey. His boss tells him not to do that but to continue on with his job as it is. One wonders if this is because he wants to protect his wife, or is he trying to get close to her. He certainly seems to be obsessed with her. Then one night, he is on his way home when Rosey stops him. He asks her what he should do, and she tells him to follow her to her house at night. With his partner following, he heads over there... And meets his new love.
Overall, this movie is fun to watch. There are laughs in this one, but the main theme is infidelity. It is interesting to see how people deal with infidelity, and how their lives can change after it happens. So if you have an open mind, this one might be good for you to watch. MG The Gloster could stand on its own as a great movie. The only thing holding it back is the acting and the story itself. Normally I am not a big fan of movies that have a big plot involving a huge amount of sexiness, but this one has a convincing enough storyline that I saw no reason not to watch it. Sure the acting is a little odd at times, but I suppose that's part of the movie's charm. If you enjoy watching movies where the actors all over the world are absolutely beautiful, and the only thing they need to do is to sleep with as many women as they can, then this one is for you. I know I loved it.
As for me, I liked it, but it was not my cup of tea. I think it's a little too melodramatic for my taste, but then again, maybe it's just me. If you are a big romance fan like I am, or you enjoy watching movies where the main characters are totally oblivious of who or what they're in love with, then you will like MG The Gloster. I enjoyed the story and the acting. It just doesn't ring true, as I'm not into that kind of stuff. You can buy the movie on DVD, and I recommend it to anyone else that might be a little bored with the most recent romantic epics. You can also rent it from most video rental shops in your area. When I saw it the first time, I thought "Man, this is great! ".
